In commercial marketing research, it is normal to combine qual and
quant, sequentially. Often a limited amount of qual precedes
construction of the quant questionnaire. Qual work is also used
to investigate interesting /unexpected /ambiguous etc. quant
findings. Just occasionally, there is a serious effort to use
different methodologies to achieve "triangulation". When qual and
quant stages are carried out simultaneously, it is however more
often a matter of time pressure than for this reason.
There may be useful methodological insights to be gained, if you
do get your two teams to produce independent reports. And, of
course, you can have greater confidence in findings that are
replicated by different research techniques. Lucie Rychetnik has
commented similarly, and - if you do pursue the "blinding"
experiment - many of us will be very interested to discover what
transpires.
