I think it is scandalous that in the UK there are therapists treating in a 2 teir system, dictated solely by the
patients ability to pay(for private insurance). Whatever happened to unconditional positive regard for those we
treat? This further feeds into the system, as those that pay cream off the best care, and those in more need have
to make do with waiting lists, truncated "pigeon hole" treatments and, dare I say, possibly less experienced
health proffessionals, that the rich will not pay to see? We do do ourselves an injustice by handing out protocol
type treatments, as then we open the door to Doctors doing the same thing and not reffering the patient to a
therapist in the first place. I also hear that those doctors who do see private patients use NHS facilities for
surgery, so extending the wait list for NHS clients.
I am as guilty as anyone, the system got me down, so I came to the States. Here the system is not perfect
either, and I have spoken to Canadian therapists who fled the socialised system there. I do have the time I need
to evaluate, treat and decide my treatment plan in more than 20 mins. Its all the documentation that is the bain of
my life now.
I love the work, I work in cancer care, and am always amazed at what the human spirit will do to live in the
face of such adversity. So, thats my rant. Hope I also prolongue my heart attack or stroke for a while, and if
not, I know some great therapists for rehab!
So, go uot there and have some fun, make a difference in someones life, it's what it is all about.
Tracey.
