In 1588 the lord of the manor of Barnet, Herts was granted a renewed
market charter, which, amongst other things, changed the weekly market
day from Thursday to Monday. The townspeople of Leighton Buzzard
complained that the sale at their ancient Tuesday market, of cattle to
London and elsewhere was being forestalled by the Barnet market, and
that they were 'likely to be ruined'. They applied to parliament in 1592
for an Act to change Barnet market day back to a Thursday. (3rd Rep.
RCHMss, H. of L. Mss.) The Act probably failed: it is not mentioned in
LJ. or CJ. and some 160 years later Barnet market was still held on a
Monday. Can anyone in Leighton Buzzard or Bedfordshire throw any light
on this matter?
Thank you.
