May I draw list members' attention to two new initiatives which may be of
interest to anyone who is thinking of starting or further developing his or
her posgraduate research in Italian Studies?
*CENTRE FOR THE STUDY OF LEOPARDI AND THE AGE OF ROMANTICISM* The Centre,
created at Birmingham in 1998 in collaboration with the Centro Nazionale di
Studi Leopardiani and the Italian Cultural Institute, promotes research into
Leopardi's life and work, the connections between Leopardi and European
Romanticism, the reception of Leopardi in Britain and continental Europe,
and more broadly Anglo-Italian cultural relations in the late 18th century
and first half of the 19th. Postgraduate supervision is offered in all of
these areas; the principal supervisors are Professor Michael Caesar and Dr
Franco D'Intino. A special Leopardi bursary to the value of GBP 2,750 is
available for 1999/2000.
*MPHIL (MODE B): LANGUAGE, LAW AND LITERATURE IN MODERN ITALY* This is a
research degree which includes an inbuilt skills and methods module (20
credits) and a tailored taught core course (40 credits) as well as the
dissertation (120 credits). The interdisciplinary programme reflects the
growing research interest in the relations between language, law and the
representation of the legal process in literature, film and other media.
The taught course addresses issues of genre and definition, introduces the
analysis of legal language, and then focuses on specific topics: Law and
gender in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; The linkage between law
and literature from the Enlightenment to Romanticis; and Politics, law and
literature in the 1970s (two out of the three). The programme is taught by
Michael Caesar, Silvia Evangelisti, Gerry Slowey and Jacqueline Visconti,
and supervision for the final dissertation is offered throughout the year.
In addition to the Leopardi bursary mentioned above, an extensive portfolio
of awards is available from the School of Humanities. All postgraduate
degree programmes are available both full-time and part-time.
