The Environmental Archaeology of Industry
(Association of environmental archaeologists annual conference 99)
Dates: 27th-29th August 1999.
Venue: University of Surrey, Guildford.
Organisers: Patricia Wiltshire (UCL), Peter Murphy (UEA).
Archaeology shows an unfortunate tendency to fragment into discrete
sub-disciplines, for example, industrial archaeology has often been
seen as the preserve of those with interests in technology and
production. However, all aspects of work have profound environmental
impacts in terms of the procurement of raw materials, fuel supply,
disposal of wastes, processing, distribution, and consumption,
besides having effects on human and animal health.
The aims of this conference are to focus attention on these
environmental aspects of past industry, defined broadly so as to
include any process involving the use of organic raw materials. We
aim therefore to bridge the gap between industrial and environmental
archaeology.
Papers are invited on aspects of the bio- and geoarchaeology of all
kinds of industry.
