National Postgraduate Colloquium in German Studies
Next meeting of the Colloquium:
Saturday, 10 April and Sunday, 11 April 1999
at St Anne's College, Oxford
The National Postgraduate Colloquium in German Studies was first held
in London in 1986. Since 1988 it has been held twice a year, once in
the autumn at the Institute of Germanic Studies, London, and once in
the spring at another university in Britain. Venues so far have been
Bristol, Cambridge, Manchester, Norwich, Oxford, St Andrews,
Sheffield and Swansea.
The Colloquium was created to enable postgraduate students
approaching the end of their research to present work to a wider
audience and, at the same time, to help those beginning their
research to form an idea of the finished thesis and to provide an
opportunity for students from different parts of Britain and Ireland
to make contact. Whilst still aiming to fulful these roles, since
1989 there has been a gradual shift away from the presentation of
finished thesis work, allowing for discussion of open questions
arising out of work in progress, a more active role for all
participants and allowing those still in the early stages of their
research to give papers or lead discussions.
