Germany, My Germany: Lecture Series
Following the hugely successful lectures given in this series at the
end of 1998, the Goethe-Institut is pleased to announce the following
lectures for 1999. All lectures start at 7.30pm and will be given in
English.

Lord Weidenfeld
Born in Vienna, George Weidenfeld left Austria for England in 1938.
During World War II he worked with the BBC Overseas Service, mainly
as News Commentator on European Affairs, and in 1945 founded the
publishing firm, Weidenfeld & Nicolson, with Nigel Nicolson. In 1949
he became Political Adviser and Chef de Cabinet in Israel to Chaim
Weizmann before returning to Britain. A British citizen since 1946,
he has been twice honoured for his work in Britain first through a
knighthood and secondly through a peerage in 1976. He was Vice
Chairman of the University of Oxford Campaign (1992 - 1994) and since
1994 he has been Vice President of the Oxford University Development
Programme and is especially involved with the Europaeum network of
postgraduate Institutes of European Affairs. He was made an Honorary
Senator of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitaet, Bonn
(1996). Among other appointments he is Chairman of Weidenfeld &
Nicolson; a Director of Holinger International; Chairman, Board of
Governors, Ben Gurion University of the Negev; Member of the South
Bank Board, London; Governor of Tel-Aviv University; Governor of the
Weizmann Institute.

Cem OEzdemir MdB
Cem OEzdemir, the son of Turkish immigrants, was born in 1965 in
Swabia. During his training as a nursery school teacher and before
graduating in educational studies, he acquired practical work
experience as a journalist and speaker on political and cultural
issues. At the age of 18 he became a German citizen and began his
political career as a member of the executive board of "Buendnis
90/Die Gruenen". In 1994 he made history by becoming the first
representative of the "new Inlaenders" (the second generation of
immigrants born in Germany) to be elected Member of the Federal
Parliament and is today the only Member of Parliament representing
this minority. Cem OEzdemir is currently a speaker on the immigration
policies of his party and is a member of various parliamentary
committees.

Gisela Stuart MP
Gisela Stuart was born in 1955. After her school education in
Vilsbiburg, Germany she came to England to study at Manchester
Polytechnic (Business Studies) and London University (LLB). After a
bookseller apprenticeship she became Deputy Director of the London
Book Fair (1982), translator, law lecturer (Worcester College of
Technology) and researcher into law relating to pensions (Birmingham
University). On 1 May 1997 Gisela Stuart was elected to represent
Birmingham Edgbaston - a seat never held by Labour - marking the
first Labour gain on election night. She gave her maiden speech on
Women and Pensions, served on the Social Security Standing Committee,
spoke in the Welfare to Work adjournment debate and granted a full
adjournment debate on the dangers of Ecstasy. She is also a Member of
the Social Security Select Committee.
