Colleagues,
This is my first message. Forgive me for joining german-studies with an
ulterior motive. I'd like to draw the following event to your attention.
Since assembling the programme unfortunately Alasdair King has had to drop
out. I am putting out feelers for a replacement speaker, but time is
short, and we will probably simply finish 45 minutes earlier.
Email responses are welcome, but cheques in hard copy please, rather
than virtual!
Best wishes,
Axel Goodbody
Environmentalism in Contemporary German Culture
Colloquium at the UNIVERSITY OF BATH
Saturday, 6 March, 1999
Political and social aspects of the environmental movement in Germany
have been widely written about in the past decade. The cultural dimension
of environmentalism has, however, only begun to attract attention more
recently.
This colloquium aims to illustrate the role of culture in reflecting and
directing social change by examining the part played by literature,
journalism, television, film and art in the shift towards ecological
values over the past 30 years. The colloquium is intended as an informal
occasion. Papers are limited to 30 minutes in length, followed by 15
minutes' discussion. Conference languages are English and German.
The event will end with a poetry reading by the Berlin poet and essayist
Richard Pietraß, a longstanding member of the 'Literatur um Welt' group of
environmentally committed writers and journalists. There will be an
opportunity to view the popular exhibition of British and German cartoons
'A Common Cause - Our Environment' on the campus.
