On this side of the puddle, let me just present two facts regarding the
National Football League (forget the Superbowl, but I will watch it
cheering on the Dirty Birds - sorry, the Atlanta Falcons). First, Doug
Flutie, the quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, has an autistic son. He
does commercials being quite upfront that his son is autistic. He also is
pushing Flutie Flakes (a breakfast food) all the profit from which goes to
a foundation named for his son which is concerned about autism. He then
goes into a pitch for Wheaties. A part of the profit (probably how he is
being paid) from the Wheaties will also go to the foundation. Secondly,
many, many NFL players do advertisements during games promoting some
reasonably good groups like United Way (though they have their problems).
The spots, however, are well done. No patronizing of anyone in them.
