Usability of VLs
A Special Track of VL'99: 1999 IEEE Symposium on Visual Languages
Track Chairs: Margaret M. Burnett (Oregon State University, USA) and
Maria Francesca Costabile (University of Bari, Italy)
The primary reason for VL research is to increase human effectiveness
in communicating with computers. For this reason, we view research on
techniques and tools for designing, developing and evaluating
usability aspects of VLs to be a central, core subdiscipline of VL
research. Hence, this year, the VL conference is planning a track
featuring human factors and usability issues of visual
languages. Toward this end, several VL Program Committee members whose
specialties lie in this particular subarea will be reviewing papers
submitted to this track:
Margaret Burnett, Oregon State University (Track Co-Chair)
Maria Francesca Costabile, University of Bari (Track Co-Chair)
Thomas Green, University of Leeds
Albert Badre, Georgia Institute of Technology
Susan Wiedenbeck, Dalhousie University
Paul Mulholland, Open University
Please join us in bringing this subdiscipline to the fore by
submitting a paper about your research in this area. For this track we
particularly invite papers related to the following (non-exclusive)
list of topics:
Empirical studies related to usability of VLs
Evaluation techniques for the usability of VLs
Theoretical aspects of usability of VLs
We are especially interested in work that adds new insights into how
to build usable visual languages. For example, does a particular
feature provide greater usability for some task than has been
accomplished before? If so, how? Who does this feature help, why, and
how do we know?
To submit a paper, follow the paper submission instructions on the
main web page:
