THE OPEN UNIVERSITY
INSTITUTE OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
CENTRE FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION (CITE)
TEMPORARY RESEARCH FELLOW/ASSISTANT IN
EDUCATIONAL COGNITIVE SCIENCE (Full-time/Part-time)
ADVERT
Applications are invited for a Research Fellow/Assistant within the Open
University's Institute
of Educational Technology to work on a research project, `Evaluating and
Investigating Learning
Through Collaborative Argumentation'. The post is offered on a full-time
basis, but part-time
will be considered - for a minimum of 3 days a week.
Broadly, the successful applicant will carry out an empirical study in
the context of designing
educational dialogues suitable for new media. Specifically, the project
will evaluate and
investigate a collaborative framework for argumentation that supports
improvements in
understanding science. The appointee will conduct an empirical study in
a secondary school to
test and examine this `dialogue game', perform qualitative analysis of
the dialogue game
interactions and elaborate the design of an on-line tool that supports
the desired dialectic
activity. The project leader is Dr. Andrew Ravenscroft, to whom informal
enquiries can be
directed (Telephone: 01908 652908, email [log in to unmask],
http://www-iet.open.ac.uk/pp/A.Ravenscroft/andrew.html).
The successful applicant will be a postdoctoral researcher, will have
recently completed their
doctoral studies or have demonstrable research experience in
psychology/education/cognitive
science or other relevant discipline and have strong experimental and
analytic skills -
preferably in education/dialogue contexts. Some experience in
model/theory development and
artificial intelligence/dialogue system design would be an advantage.
Applicants must also have
a first degree or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline (e.g.
psychology, cognitive
science, philosophy, linguistics).
The post is tenable for twelve months from March 1999 (or up to 18
months part-time), and will
be based in Milton Keynes. Salary will be on the Research Fellow scale,
grade 1A (15,735 -
23,651 pounds sterling per annum) or Research Assistant scale, grade 1B
(15,735 - 17,570 pounds
per annum) depending on experience and qualifications. Initial salary
will not exceed 17,570
pounds per annum, and these scales will apply on a pro-rata basis if
part-time.
An application form and further particulars (and access details for
disabled applicants) are
available from Mrs Pat Cross on Milton Keynes (01908) 652916, email:
