Research Opportunities in the HCI group
Napier University, Edinburgh
Following the successful negotiation of a new research contract under
the ESPRIT programme, a number of research opportunities have arisen
for active, enthusiastic and able researchers in Human-Computer
Interaction (HCI). The research, Esprit Project no. P29158 in the
Theme: Information Access and Interfaces is called FLEX (Flexible
knowledge-based information access and navigation using multimodal
input/output) and is concerned with developing and prototyping the
interaction with a new concept: the 'Home Information Centre' (HIC).
Four posts are available from January 1999 or as soon as possible
thereafter
Research Fellow 2 years 0.25 post up to Aug 1999
then F/T until Dec. 2000 23651 pa
The research fellow will act as project co-ordinator and will take
overall responsibility for the running of Napier University's part of
the project. The co-ordinator will ensure that deliverables are
completed on time and are of a suitably high standard. She or he will
attend project meetings, liase with the other project partners and
promote and contribute to the dissemination of results. The
co-ordinator is particularly responsible for the leadership of Work
Package 1.
The project co-ordinator will have a PhD in Computing, HCI or related
area and experience in working on, or running European projects. The
research fellow will be closely involved in identifying the user group
who is likely to buy the FLEX technology and conducting usability tests
and field tests of the prototype systems
Research Fellow 1 year c. 18750 pa
The successful candidate will have, or be near to completing a PhD in
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) or related area. The research fellow
will lead Napier's workpackages associated with the analysis, design
and evaluation of interfaces to the Home Information Centre. In
particular the research fellow will;
Study people using existing information providers content, conduct
experiments and evaluation in the usability laboratory of the
commercial partner and in the field of different user interface
solutions, contribute to design suggestions for the use of each input
device and for their combination in multimodal input and undertake
usability studies of the first prototype.
Research Assistant 1 year c. 15629 pa
The Research Assistant will have a higher degree in HCI or related area
and will be able to work efficiently with others on the project team.
Specifically the RA will be responsible for studying different forms of
visualisation, and the appropriateness of alternative output formats
such as auralisation considering the capabilities of the given screen
types and the nature of information spaces implement prototype displays
using a suitable programming language and analyse how to let the system
adapt to the needs of different users.
Research Student 2 years 7000 pa
The Research Student will have a first degree in cognitive science,
computing or other relevant discipline and will be able to programme in
a relatively low level language. The Research Students will register
for a higher degree at Napier University. In addition to the research
student bursary of 7000 pa, the fees for the research degree will be
paid and additional payments will be made where appropriate for third
party assistance on the project.
The main area of study for the research student will be in the area of
understanding and defining the dimensions of information spaces within
the constraints of the HIC.
