Research Chair in User-Centred Design
The Department of Psychology at Carleton University is pleased to invite
applications for a funded research chair in user-centred design. Funding
for the chair will be provided by Nortel Networks, Mitel Corp.,
Communications and Information Technology Ontario (CITO), Ottawa Centre
for Research and Innovation (OCRI), and the Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council of Canada.
The chair holder will work in the Computer User Research and Evaluation
Program (CURE) in the Department of Psychology, perform research that
will advance a user-centred approach to product design, serve as a
high-profile catalyst to expand relevant research and course offerings
within Carleton, and serve as advocate and champion for the user-centred
product design approach across Canada. We are looking for a
distinguished HCI person with a Ph.D., an outstanding record of
research, and excellent teaching skills. The candidate should feel
comfortable working with leaders from industry and the government. The
candidate can be an academic psychologist with extensive experience
working with industry on HCI issues, a non-academic psychologist from
the HCI industry, or a productive non-psychologist with interests that
are user-oriented and fit in a psychology environment.
The successful candidate will come into the Carleton Department of
Psychology as a Full Professor and may have a joint appointment in
another university department, depending on interests. Emphasis will be
on research, but the candidate will teach a one-semester course each
year.
In addition to competitive salary for the chair holder, there is
generous support for equipment, software, telecommunications
infrastructure, a research associate, research funding for graduate
students, etc. Excellent office and laboratory facilities are available.
The CURE program, established in 1978, was the first human-computer
interaction graduate program based in a Psychology Department in Canada,
and one of the first in North America. The program is staffed by three
Department of Psychology faculty members, and we are currently
advertising for a new assistant professor. The CURE program is unique in
Canada in offering a range of HCI training in a Psychology Department.
CURE graduates are working at small and large companies in Canada and
the United States. The proposed chair, and the program supported by the
chair, will stress the importance of collaboration involving psychology,
industrial design, computing science, software engineering and other
disciplines.
The proposed chair, together with our industrial sponsors, will lead the
development of a user-centered approach across Canada. The expanded CURE
program will be a demonstration for other universities and companies of
how HCI professionals responsible for the needs of users can be trained
and integrated into the product development process. Faculty members in
CURE have excellent relations with industry. One objective of the
proposed chair is to expand research collaboration with our industrial
sponsors.
Carleton is a central part of the TeleCHI Institute funded by
Communications and Information Technology Ontario (CITO). TeleCHI is
headed by Dr.Tom Carey at the University of Waterloo. This "distributed"
institute, built around a nucleus from Waterloo and Carleton, and other
universities in Ontario and across Canada, will use distance learning
technology to offer world class teaching and do world class research on
user-centred design. The funded chair will lead a TeleCHI team concerned
with the psychological side of HCI.
Carleton is a provincial university with an enrollment of approximately
15,000, located in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The Ottawa region,
centre of a booming high technology industry has an excellent standard
of living.
