INSTITUTE OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
PhD STUDENTSHIP IN
EDUCATIONAL COGNITIVE SCIENCE/NEW MEDIA DESIGN
Applications are invited for a funded PhD Studentship, of three years
duration, entitled 'Learning, Dialectics and Design for New Media'. The broad aim of
this research is to explore, investigate and develop frameworks for argumentation
that support learning with new knowledge media. The project supervisors are
Dr. Andrew Ravenscroft and Dr. Eileen Scanlon, to whom informal enquiries can be

[log in to unmask]). The post is open to UK and overseas applicants.
The successful applicant will be resident in the UK, living within
reasonable commuting distance from Miltom Keynes.
The successful applicant will have completed or expect to complete a
Bachelor degree or equivalent in psychology, cognitive science, computer science
or
other relevant discipline (e.g. philosophy, media studies, linguistics) and have
or
expect to get at least an upper second class honours degree. Applicants who
have a Masters degree including relevant aspects of cognitive science/artificial
intelligence/new media design or some appropriate interdisciplinary research
experience will be particularly welcome.
The Institute has achieved a national and international reputation for its
research in designing and using new media for education, and provides a
stimulating and supportive research environment. It consists of
approximately one hundred academic/research staff and PhD students, holds a top
research
assessment rating (i.e. of 5) and has strong links with other research
centres in the university - such as the Knowledge Media Institute, the Centre for
Language and Communications and the departments of Psychology and Sociology.
The project is due to start in October 1999 and will be based at Milton
Keynes.
The student's grant will be paid at the standard research council rate, and
includes an annual training support grant to finance participation in
work-shops, conferences and the like. An application form with further
