i have just rung the SA embassy in london about this, as nobody else going
to a conference in SA from the UK that i know has had to get a visa, it's
the first we've heard of it (it's certainly not on the wac4 pages) and it's
too late for those of us who are going tomorrow or thursday. they said that
a visa was *not* required from UK, just evidence of return or onward travel
in the form of a ticket, a passport valid for 6 months after the end-date of
the visit, and a 'letter of invitation' for the conference - i take it that
your registration confirmation will fulfil this latter requirement, but you
could always print off the call for papers from the web as well. anyway, if
john is right that for visitors from some other countries there's a
distinction between being a participant and being a presenter (though i find
this very strange), i don't see any reason why you need go into the details
of your academic participation with an immigration officer...we are all
participants, and there will be some who speak for far longer from the floor
than those of us who happen to be officially presenting...
see you all in the beer tent! sara
