The following GLADMAIL message is a request for assistance from our
colleague, Professor Mak Hoi Wah, of City University Hong Kong. Colleagues
who can provide assistance are kindly asked to communicate directly with
Professor Mak.
Recently, the Movement Against Discrimination, of which I am the Chairman,
commented on the not-so-user-friendliness of the new Chek Lap Kok Airport
and ask for improvements. We have urged the Hong Kong Airport Authority to
implement a barrier free airport for people with mobility, visual and
hearing impairment and develop an improvement plan with regular input and
participation by the groups concerned. We are meeting the representatives
from the Airport Authorities later this week to present our views.
As it is quite a new experience for us in Hong Kong, I don't know whether
we can learn from community groups from other parts of the world. We learn
that the Vancouver Airport has set barrier free access as a target and made
information access more user friendly. Moreover, the American with
Disabilities Act seems to provide better protection for those with
disabilities. Are there more concrete design manuals or guidelines which
would ensure barrier free access which can be made available to us?
We are taking the access issue seriously and are working hard on the matter
in relation to new constructions such as the new airport. It will be
helpful to us if we can learn from our counterparts in other parts of the
world. For contacts, please provide us information through my email:
