I don't think taping the mask down is in the slightest way wise not only
from the point of view of potential aspiration but also from the point of
view of patient comfort; many agitated patients clutch at and pull off
face masks as the most irritating piece of hardware.
Can I recommend this rather elderly but useful article:
Fixed performance oxygen masks: an evaluation Hill SL, Barnes PK,
Hollway T, Tennant R BMJ 1984;288:1261-3
They comment that "...the use of low volume masks and high oxygen flow
rates should produce more consistent results than high volume masks and
lower flow rates."
The best type was found to be a fixed-performance Venturi-type mask.
