They are probably referring to Mr. David Wong, consultant ophthalmologist at
the Royal Liverpool Hospital. he has performed 7 of the procedures only one
of which has been truly successful. After appearing in many papers and on TV
he was apparently inundated with an enormous number of requests which has
caused a lot of problems (allegedly).
The procedure is only suitable for 5% of patients with macular degeneration
and has to be done within 7 weeks of diagnosis.
Like many other "press" stories the information given to the public "sight
saving surgery" etc. is far from the truth (or whtat they were apparently
told) and has sadly led top a lot of false hope amongst patients and stress
on the health team involved.
