Jerry Hoffman did a fine hatchet job on t-Pa in stroke at Vancouver - one
of the few academic highlights for me. It is noteworthy that ONLY the FDA
have approved the use of thrombolysis in stroke, and that only as a result
of the NINDS study, which had to have the data rehashed several times
before a group that benefitted was found. All the other studies had been
terminated because of unacceptable mortality in the treated group.
Actually, NINDS mortality was high too, but it was not terminated.
My reading of the literature suggests that while a drug to treat
thrombotic stroke is a great idea, it isn't any of the ones we have tried
so far.
Best wishes,
