I could not agree more with Andrew. We must try to stop using Casualty we
must stick for the time been to our name but start working behind the
scenes with the goverment on a proper recognistion of our specialty and the
way we are running our departments. We need to focus this in the political
agenda as forcifully as possible.
Someone needs also to address the problem of the NHS being used as a
political football. We need to get the NHS out of the political arena into
some serious bi-partisan debate to lok at all the options available to
improve what in my view is an ever deteriorating service.
Once this debate takes place and recognition is made as the important
contribuition made by ERmergency Medicine then we can start thinking of
changing our name.
It is essential that who ever stands for president of BAEM needs to have
the credibility of the members, needs to be someone from graduated from a
respected training program so as to understand the issues and must be able
to communicate with the high powers in goverment. The next years will be
crucial.
