As far as I know, there are no plans to protect anything other than the term "paramedic". I don't think that making the situation more complicated still is going to help. People (think that they) understand the terms "nurse", "doctor" and "paramedic". I don't think that they know what an "ambulance technician" is, suspecting that they change the oil, and repair the engine or something like that!
Whilst I appreciate the position that some non-professionals may be put in, I'm doubtful whether introducing further levels of hierarchy has any benefit. People still won't understand, and will still refer to everyone in sight as a paramedic...
