The Program on Gender & Culture and the Higher Education
                        Support Program announces its

                      >>Fourth Regional Seminar<<
             >> Women in Literature and the Arts: <<
                  >> Ten Years After the Changes <<

The Higher Education Support Program (HESP) and the Program on
Gender & Culture at the Central European University are co-organising
a Regional Faculty Seminar beginning in October 1999 entitled Women in
Literature and the Arts This seminar builds on the previous HESP Regional
Seminars on Gender & Culture which examined the vast political and
cultural transformations in the region as mediated through the concept of gender.
The 1999-2000 seminar seeks to articulate the changes which have occurred in
the situation of women in the region on the basis of new developments in
women's literature and the arts. This involves diverse disciplinary approaches
dealing with both the production and the market for women's literature and
arts from the "popular" to the "elitist".

Objectives of the Seminar
* to give prominence to the cultural changes characterising the transition
in the region as reflected upon by women artists

* to allow the different viewpoints of faculty and scholars in Central
and Eastern Europe to be heard within current debates about gender in literature
and the arts

* to attempt an assessment of the transition period on the basis of new
possibilities of expression for women

* to foster and support new developments concerning women and culture
in the region

* to stimulate the development and circulation of syllabi and teaching materials
in women's and gender studies

* to encourage the introduction of new courses and/or teaching modules on gender
issues in institutions of higher learning in the region

* to articulate new conceptual frameworks that will aid research on women
and gender

* to give prominence to gender and women's studies in the region

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Organisation of the Seminar

The Seminar will be composed of four three-day workshops all interrelated,
but each with a distinctive theme. All four workshops will take place at the
CEU, Budapest, on the dates listed below.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The Proposed Themes Are:
