There are two good ways around this.
1. Netscape sell an educational licence to a package that includes
Communicator 4.05 and the tools to configure it according to your
particular network configuration (so, e.g., the individual user files need
no longer stay in subdirectories of the Netscape directory).
2. Netscape 4.5 will let you store individual configuration information on
a LDAP server. If you have such a server (e.g. for E-mail client options
or an X.500 directory) you could use it for Netscape as well.
The advantage of doing 1 or 2 is that Communicator then becomes practical
for mass student and staff use for reading news and mail as well as
browsing the WWW. Each person will have their own mailbox, and keep their
individual record of read and unread news articles. Stick up a calendar
server and every student project group and every research group will be
able to co-ordinate their work.
