			WebMaster Training Course

The next running of UKERNA's popular WebMaster Training Course will
be run at the University of Glamorgan on 7-8th April 1999.  

The course is aimed at those designing, running, supporting, and 
managing World Wide Web sites.

In line with the course's aim of addressing those responsible for web
sites attention is paid more to the who and why of running a web site
rather than just the how. There are sections on design, policy and 
style as well as authoring, security and the legal implications.

The course programme is enclosed for your information.  The course 
commences with registration at 10:30am for 11:00am on the first day 
and will close around 4:00pm on the final day.  Meals provided as 
part of the course will be morning coffee, lunch, and afternoon tea.

There are limited places on the courses so if you have staff who would 
like to attend please contact the training section via e-mail 
<[log in to unmask]> or telephone 01235 822250 as soon as possible.  
Delegates planning to attend will have to fund their own travel and 
accommodation.  

Fees (in pounds sterling) for the course are:-
	For staff from Primary connected sites	200.00 plus VAT	(Total 235.00)
	For staff from Sponsored or other sites	400.00 plus VAT	(Total 470)
	For staff from FE Colleges sponsored by the HEFCE Networking 
	Initiative - please contact your local Support Centre 
	(either ULCC or Sunderland)

Provisional bookings can be taken by e-mail or telephone and these will 
be confirmed on receipt of a purchase order and completed booking form. 
Booking forms are available on our web site at the above address. 
Invoices will be issued following the course.  If for some reason a 
delegate cannot attend the course, they will incur a 50% charge if UKERNA 
is notified before 1st April 1999.  Any cancellations received after this 
date will be charged the full course fee.

Bed and Breakfast Accommodation at the University of Glamorgan is 
available to delegates at a rate of pounds 30.00 per night. Anyone 
wishing accommodation should indicate that firmly on the booking form.

UKERNA and the University of Glamorgan will accept no responsibility for 
accidents to delegates whilst on its property or for damage to, or loss 
of their personal property, in the absence of negligence.

                                 WebMaster Course 



The course is aimed at those running, supporting, and managing World Wide 
Web sites. 

In line with the course's aim of addressing those responsible for web 
sites attention is paid more to the who and why of running a web site

as authoring, security and the legal implications. For the technophiles
there are sections on the more recent additions to web technology  
including Java, Frames and VRML. 


Please note that the following is an indication of the course contents. 
This course in the process of development and will change to keep up with 
advances in the technology. 

Introduction 
       Introduction to the course, contents, and speakers. 

Site Design 
       An examination of design principles and an extrapolation of 
	those principles into web technology. 

Networking for WebMasters 
       An overview of the World Wide Web, looking at the networking 
	component and how it impacts on web functionality. 

Web Strategy 
       A look at what others are getting from web and what can be 
	achieved. Formulation of policy, strategy and mission. 

Information Base Contents 
       Content selection and control, who does what. Maintenance and 
	retirement of documents. 

Information Base Structure 
       What structure should your information base have, what 
	structures are possible, reasons for different structures. 

Document Design 
       Graphics vs text, how much graphic and its implications. 
	Design of documents from the graphic viewpoint. Writing style
	and style guidelines, should we have them and how should they 
	be promoted and enforced. 

Pictures
      A look at the most significant element of web pages bandwidth 
	requirements, and how some of the effects might be mitigated.

Legal Issues 
       A review of some of the legal implications of running a web 
	server and how they can be implemented. 

Security Issues 
       How to make your server secure. Server setup, proxies, intranets
 	and Firewalls. 

Operations 
       How to keep your site up to date and accurate, an examination 
	of some tools assisting with maintaining sites and evaluating
	the impact of sites. 

Java 
       An overview of Java and its capablities. How Java can be applied
 	to web and some implications of that application. 

VRML 
       An introduction to Virtual Reality Modelling Language including 
	3D graphics, animation and interaction. 

Introduction to Frames 
       An exploration of the capabilities of HTML Frames. 

Review 
       Review of the course, where to get more information and help.
