Hi,
Such an interesting discussion :-) Much more interesting than projecting
salary costs so I am taking a break from the latter.
My thought has to do with the idea of managing the web (define what you
want to manage and you'll come to a completely different set of
problems). The web "is so many things". I am tempted to
say that in most persons view (mine too unless I try really hard)
management - in a web sense - would bring to mind words like (in no
particular order): - consistency
- quality
- uptodateness
- aesthetics
- corporate image
- marketing (have any universities got a "real" marketing depts or many
units that do something like a marketing activity ... to the best of
their ability).
Ehmmmmm, where I am getting at is that once we start arguing about
"managing the web" we can be trying to turn the web into an electronic
kind of a paper based propectus. Nothing wrong with that and many/all
Universities do it on at least their top pages.
The problem is how to move away from the top layer or pretty pages and
create real useful content. Management has to succeed in
- facilitating
- encouraging
- getting by the scruff of the neck (if need be :)
the so many people a university has and convincing them to take an
ego trip and put their stuff on the web.
Succeed in getting a momentum of material being placed on the web, get a
few committee papers distributed over your intranet (save a few œ,000s)
and you might get some sympathetic ears for resources etc. (On second
thoughts I am too optimistic. Professor Bloggs will still think that the
Unis' Home Page Maureen printed for him is a black and white photocopy of
the undergraduate prospectus. Oh well, can't win them all!).
Apologies if I am too philosophical, reaction from what I've been working
all day.
Regards
Charles
I forgot to say ... a view of the www is "it is a waste of time". So
managing it is ...
[Not my opinion I hasten to add].
