Smart cards are an integral part of transport telematics, but their
true potential lies in their ability to integrate a variety of services.
The Transport Operations Research Group (TORG) at the university of
Newcastle in the UK, has for some time been co-ordinating a
major European research project, which uses smart cards to
assimilate many important social functions - including transportation.
The DISTINCT project, headed by Phil Blythe, is investigating the
possibility of combining the following services at five European test sites:
* "Democracy on-line"
* Tourist and travel information
* Booking facilities
* Tele-shopping
* Tele-working
* Distance learning
* Banking
* Public transport
* Road tolling
* Parking facilities
* Healthcare services
* Elderly and disabled support
To promote the project ...
The 3rd DISTINCT User Forum "Smart Cards: Your passport to services across
Europe" is to be held in Thessaloniki, Greece on 20-21 September 1999.
There is no charge for attending this event.
This is an excellent opportunity to meet service and technology suppliers,
and to discuss the latest advances in smart card development.
*** Details of the Forum can be found at: ***
