RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP IN ROAD USER CHARGING
*****************************************************
A research studentship, funded by the UK Department of the Environment,
Transport and the Regions (DETR), is available from the 1st October 1999
for studying "The Effects of Road User Charging on the Shape of Towns and
Cities". The topic is part of a larger DETR research initiative to
investigate the consequences of introducing road user charging and is an
ideal subject for a postgraduate student wishing to obtain a PhD.
The objective of the research will be to study the long term choices people
can make in response to road user charges and, in particular, to study the
effect road user charges will have on the relocation of homes and
businesses. Four steps are planned for completing the research:
1. A review of the existing literature and development of the appropriate
theory. The review will include investigation of the result of studies
carried out abroad, especially those associated with the impact of the
Norwegian toll rings. The review will also identify existing data sources.
2. Surveys, which could take various forms and will depend upon the
evidence from the literature search, the demands of the theory and the
availability of existing data.
3. Analysis of survey results, development of models and testing of
hypotheses.
4. Delivery of the thesis and final report to DETR.
The research project is likely to be particularly attractive to a young
mathematician, applied scientist, transport economist or economic
geographer. Funding is available for three years, including payment of
fees, maintenance etc at standard EPSRC rates and limited overseas travel.
The successful applicant will be expected start no later than 1 November
1999 and anyone wishing to be considered should register their interest as
soon as possible and no later than 17 August 1999 with the Transportation
Research Group, University of Southampton at the address below. The
research will be supervised jointly by Professor John Wootton and Dr Glenn
Lyons.
