The UTSG list "belongs" to its members and they should be able to
define its operation. Upto now the list has, I hope, been
characteristed by a high "signal to noise" ratio. This is achieved by:
A) Trying to discourage lengthy debate on matters related to transport
(other medium are available for this kind of exchange);
B) Allowing limited forms of advertising. This has primarily been in the
advertisment of job vacancies and the announcement of transport related
courses;
C) Limited requests for assistance.
Two recent posts which I have forwarded to the list have tested these
bounds. I have had requests to "advertise" other individual's
publications and a comment that students should use their supervisor
and more "traditional" means to try and source data/information.
In retrospect I think the book advert should not have been posted,
not a comment on the quality of the publication, since it opens a
flood gate for similar requests. Notice of books have, in the past, been
placed on list but usually accompanied by offers of inspection copies.
The request for information I am, on balance, not sorry I posted since
the internet is a valuable way of sourcing data for individuals without
established contacts and there has been at least one offer of help.
If you think there should be a change to any of the points A to C
please email me (NOT THE LIST) at [log in to unmask] If there
is little or no response I'll take it that all's fine at the moment.
