As a debating point - surely a conference on increasing car occupancy should
offer a virtual bulletin board (as the BMC does for climbers) to register
their car trips so that they can fill the cars. Likewise the sharing of rides
is very limited in scope - and US experience suggest that it forms a package -
using public transport and reserve measures such as emergency taxi facility
when the 'match' does not connect with holiday periods, children coming home
from school early, working late etc. Typically a per/head subscription
contract witha car hire/taxi service will deliver an emergency ride home at
relatively low cost if used for true emergencies only, where no bus, rail, or
other alternative is available.
There is also a semantic point - the term car sharing now appears to relate to
sharing a car between several drivers (Autoteilet/Stattauto et al) and the
term ride sharing would appear to be gaining preference as a more accurate
description of several people using one vehicle together. Is this the general
understanding?
