Geoffrey Walsh of Edinburgh University, a fellow member of the Museum of
Communication Foundation, has raised the following query. If you can provide
an answer or would like any clarification of what he is looking for, could I
ask you to contact Geoffrey direct on

Geoffrey's message reads:
'At one time there was a system for transmitting Morse signals to trains by
induction from wires along the track or overhead telegraph wires.
I read something about this in a book I borrowed. Unfortunately I did not
note the title. There was a line drawing of the arrangement
There is a little bit about this in Lewis Coes book <The Telegraph>
page 137. One system was credited to Thomas Edison and W. Wiley Smith, the
system was used on the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
The book I borrowed was almost certainly about Edison.
The Edinburgh public libraries only have one book about Edison (with
nothing in it about this), one childs book, and a tape, so no joy there!
Where could I find out more?'
Thank you for any help you can give. Geoffrey's e-mail address again is
