I hope this new multi-disciplinary initiative will be of interest to
members of the discussion list. I would be very grateful if the message
can
be forwarded to other appropriate groups/individuals for whom this might
be
relevant.

'Transport Visions - A Young Professionals' Perspective'
___________________________________________________________
Transport affects all our lives. Our dependence on the car is
culminating
in unacceptable levels of congestion and pollution. Transport remains
high
on the political agenda and an ongoing debate seeks to identify a way
forward to a more sustainable future. Vision documents concerning
transport
come from senior professionals with a conspicuous absence of views from
young professionals. The EPSRC has provided funds to the University of
Southampton to establish and co-ordinate a network of young
professionals
with an interest in transport. The Network will be operating for 30
months
and will address 8 themes across transport:
· The Information Society;
· Activity Patterns;
· Transportation Networks;
· Economy, Finance and Equity;
· Mode Change;
· Vehicles of the Future;
· Freight; and
· Land Use Planning.
For each theme a vision document will be produced. Network membership is
not limited to those working directly in the transport profession.
Whether
you are a transport planner, geographer, engineer, economist, market
researcher, sociologist, psychologist . . . . . . . . if you are able to
contribute imaginative, forward thinking views concerning factors that
will, should or could shape the future of transport then you are the
type
of person the Transport Visions Network needs.
