Society: "sewing societies" or trade unions?'

Simon Cordery is lecturer in the Department of History at Monmouth
College, Illinois. He is a leading authority on labour history and
friendly societies, particularly in the context of the British and
American railway industries, and has published and lectured widely on
these themes.
Birgitta Edelman is an anthropologist; she has worked at the University
of Stockholm and at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, where she
researched aspects of railway labour with Professor Fred Gamst. Her
doctoral thesis, based on fieldwork carried out among Swedish railway
workers, has been published as 'Shunters at Work: Creating a World in a
Railway Yard' (University of Stockholm, 1997).
