A new electronic service from the Centre for Maritime Research, National Maritime Museum (NMM), Greenwich
(apologies for cross-posting)
On 11 May this year, the Queen opened the much-extended Neptune Court (http://www.nmm.ac.uk/ee/neptune/neptune.htm). A total of sixteen galleries housed within a dramatic architectural space tell the story of Britain and the sea, demonstrating the importance of the ocean in our lives today.
Alongside this, an exciting Web-based project was also launched: Port, the gateway to maritime-related information on the Internet.
Port helps you find information related to maritime studies on the World Wide Web. Internet resources have been specially selected and described, and you can either search or browse the catalogue. Subjects covered range from naval construction to marine pollution, safety at sea to voyages of exploration. The catalogue currently contains some 700 resources, and this number will continue to grow. The catalogue's coverage is predominantly UK, but over time this too will expand.
The catalogue of resources is at the core of the gateway, but Port also provides easy access to a range of related electronic services developed by the Centre for Maritime Research:
* a series of research guides, providing information about the NMM's collections and about other sources for research into maritime history;
* directory listings of booksellers, maritime museums and university courses;
* an international diary of conferences and online events; and
* the e-publication, the Journal for Maritime Research.
Port is available at http://www.port.nmm.ac.uk/
We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Make the Museum's gateway on the Internet your first port of call!
Best wishes
Sarah
