Keynote Speakers

Fifteen internationally prominent keynote speakers will be featured in
plenary sessions including: Two Nobel Peace Prize winners; Francesco
Frangialli, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization; Dr.
Mohammed El Ashry, Chief Executive Officer of the Global Environment
Facility; Cora Weiss, President of the Hague Appeal for Peace; Hon. George
Payne, Chairman of Caribbean Tourism Organization; Jeremy Harris, Chair of
Mayors' Asia-Pacific Environmental Summit; and the President of the Africa
Travel Association. 
 

Conference Aim

Identify, encourage and develop tourism initiatives that will contribute to
sustainable human, social, cultural and economic development in the 21st
Century.  Particular emphasis will be placed on building two-way bridges
among developed, developing and emerging economies of the world.
 
Conference Objectives

 · Presentation and discussion of 150 'real life' case studies of "Success
Stories" from regions worldwide.
· Conceive specific projects and programs for launching in the Year 2000.
· Create a "21st Century Agenda for Peace through Tourism".
 · Provide a forum for leading thinkers and doers including researchers,
educators, policy makers and practitioners interested in the vision of
tourism as a global peace industry.
· Use the occasion of the Conference to further the sustainable tourism
aims of Glasgow, Scotland and the UK in the global context.

 Who Should Attend?

The Conference will bring together participants from more than 70 countries
representing the diverse sectors of the travel and tourism industry, both
public and private, non-governmental organizations (NGO's).  Professionals
interested in the areas of environment, parks, culture, heritage,
recreation, international exchange programs, and peace are encouraged to
attend in addition to:

· National, regional and local tourism officials.
· Tour operators, travel agents, transport and hospitality professionals.
· Educators, students, researchers, consultants, writers, journalists,
editors and publishers.
· Individuals from cultural development, and indigenous organizations.
· Urban and regional planners, landscape architects, architects, and land
developers. 

· Representatives from multi-lateral, and bi-lateral aid agencies, lending
institutions, and development 	organizations.
· Organizations promoting peace, cultural exchange and international
understanding.
· Persons interested in advancing travel opportunities for the disabled.
· Political and religious leaders.

Conference Program

In addition to keynote speakers, the Conference will feature 150 'real
life' case studies of "Success Stories" as well as workshops in concurrent
sessions. Topic areas include, but are not limited to, case studies
demonstrating the contribution of sustainable tourism to the promotion of:

 · International understanding and cooperation
· Human, social, cultural, spiritual or educational development
· Economic development
· Heritage preservation
· Environmental protection, including parks and protected areas
· Bio-diversity
· Rural and community development
· Indigenous programs
· Opportunities for the disabled
 
A sampling of "Success Stories" to be presented are: sustainable tourism
projects in Botswana, Russia, and Samoa; peace building initiatives in
Northern Ireland and Israel; and community development enterprises in
Nepal, Zambia and the Philippines.

Abstracts of case studies are invited as well as proposals for workshops.
