I didn't realise you were talking about something in the SPM results file.
The scaling here is the proportional scaling or grand mean scaling that is
done (internally) prior to the stats. It does not change the scalefactors
in the image headers.
The proportional scaling brings the "globals" (computed by spm_global) to
the same value. Grand mean scaling brings the globals to the user specified
"grand mean".
