I think the first thing to sort out is why SPM99b is having problems with
the data. Try typing the following into matlab5 and see what error messages
arise:
V=spm_vol('the_name_of_your_image.img')
img = spm_slice_vol(V,spm_matrix([0 0 4]),V.dim(1:2),1);
These could give some clues about what has gone wrong.
