SCHIZOPHRENIA - PET IMAGING FELLOWSHIP
CAMH-CLARKE INSTITUTE
UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO
The Schizophrenia PET Research team at the Centre for Addictions and Mental
Health (formerly the Clarke Institute) at the University of Toronto is
offering a fully-funded postdoctoral fellowship to begin in 1999. This will
be a full-time research position which will last for two years, with a
possibility of extension. The position is open to Canadian and non-Canadian
citizens with i) a medical degree with specialization in psychiatry,
neurology or other relevant field; or ii) recent Ph.D.'s in
neuropharmacology or psychopharmacology with experience or a strong aptitude
for human research.
The Schizophrenia Program at the CAMH is a university program with a focus
on neuroimaging research in first-episode populations, clinical
psychopharmacology and cognitive neuroscience (Drs. Shitij Kapur, Bruce
Christensen, Gary Remington, Robert Zipursky). The PET Centre is an on-site
facility with a dedicated research scanner which provides ready access to
scanning-time and methods-development for neuropsychiatric research (Drs.
Sylvain Houle, Alan Wilson, Jean DaSilva, Helen Mayberg, Randy McIntosh,
Cheryl Grady). In addition the Schizophrenia research is supported by basic
science laboratories in molecular biology (Hubert VanTol, Chaim Niznik),
pharmacology (Philip Seeman) and behavioural neuroscience (Paul Fletcher and
Franco Vaccarino).
The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary research team
focused on understanding the neurochemical mechanisms associated with
schizophrenia and its treatment. Current areas of focus include PET studies
of serotonin and dopamine receptors in schizophrenia and its treatment,
supplemented with appropriate laboratory or basic experiments. The candidate
will begin by carrying out collaborative work with the team and will be
expected to develop and carry out his or her own research relevant to
Schizophrenia/PET with the help of the team. The goal of the fellowship is
to ensure experience and expertise in research design and methods in
neurochemical neuroimaging, recruitment and characterization of patients
with schizophrenia, collection of neuroimaging data, and image processing
and analysis as is relevant. Experience in one or more of the following
areas: schizophrenia research, PET research, animal receptor studies; image
analysis; scientific computation; statistical methods - will confer an
advantage but are not absolute requirements.
Toronto provides a vibrant academic and social mileu and the stipend for the
position will be consistent with the Medical Research Council of Canada
recommendations. Send a letter of interest and a CV to Dr. Shitij Kapur at
[log in to unmask] or at 250 College Street, Toronto, ON, M5T 1R8,
Canada. This information will be used to determine the overall fit of the
candidate with the position. Short-listed candidates will then be invited to
make a more comprehensive application.
