If you have any interest in the debate around home birth and or midwifery
in the USA, I strongly recommend you to listen to a recording of a debate
on National Public Radio in the States. I'm listening to it at this very
moment and it is a great source of information. What ever the Europeans
among us have said about the rubbish on American television, American
Public Radio is often of great quality.
I had never listened to recorded radio programme on the Internet. It is
simple. When I clicked on the address below I was given clear instructions
about how to set up my computer for receiving the recording.

If you have not already heard the NPR Talk of the Nation show with Midwife
Ina May Gaskin and OBGYN Yvonne Thornton,
this will take you directly to an audio version:
Scroll down to HOUR TWO: HOME BIRTH, and use that hyperlink to hear the
program. The entire taped segment on home birth lasts 50 minutes. (If you
can not activate the link, you will need to download the "realplayer" which
is also available on this site)
Some perspective: The host, Mr Suarez continually refers to the discussion
as one on "the safety of home birth". Due to the rather abrasive and
confrontational sounding nature of the program, I found that it can be
rather difficult to listen to for very long. One of the real advantages of
listening
to this taped program is that you can pause for a break. You may need
one...... or several as I did.
Please take the time to listen and respond to NPR about this show, whatever
your feelings and thoughts may be. Take this opportunity to let the NPR
folks know that midwives and consumers of midwifery care are interested in
another opportunity to explore this subject in greater detail. Email

I realize that this may feel like "old" news to many of you. I do hope that
you might see this as a golden opportunity for midwives to open a new line
of dialogue with a national audience. Thanks for taking the time to
support our art and profession.
