Dear All, I guess a lot of people will know this but there used to be
width restriction reguarding trains going on to/ off of the East
London Line. I was a signalman at Aldgate and then Farringdon boxes
and it was the case that stock changes had to be aranged so that 2
A60s would not cross on St. Mary's curve (the juction between
Aldgate East and Whitechaple for the ELL). I also have an idea that
this was also done to avoid gauge fouling on the North curve at
Aldgate. To this end a Neasden crew would bring a A60 down to
Aldgate East where a ELL crew would take it to New Cross and the
reverse would take place on the way up. What sometime caused
problems was when the relieving crew either way was not in place! What
I can't remember was the procedure when Millwall were in the 1st
division and playing at home. I am sure there were paths in the time
table for 2 specials formed of A60s. I don't know if this
contributes anything to the original debate.
Cheers Tim Strangleman
