MRC RADIATION AND GENOME STABILITY UNIT
(RAGSU)
Senior Scientist/Programme Leader
We are seeking an outstanding scientist for this tenured career
position to build and lead a new research team within RAGSU, with
core MRC support.
Applicants will be considered in any specialization within the
overall remit of RAGSU, though molecular/cellular research with an
emphasis on biochemistry and related radiation studies or other
aspects of radiation biology, are strategically important to the
Unit's future.
The MRC has recently reviewed and reaffirmed the strategic
importance of radiation biology within Council's portfolio of DNA
damage, repair, stability and response. It agreed that a search
should commence in 2001 for a successor to the present Director
of RAGSU for continuation of the Unit at Harwell beyond his
retirement in 2003. The individual appointed to the vacant
programme-leader post would be free to apply for the Directorship,
though the two posts are not linked.
RAGSU focuses on fundamental research into the relationship of
genome stability to disease, using human, rodent and yeast
systems. It comprises about 40 scientific staff currently within 5
groups working on radiation biophysics, DNA damage and
recognition, DNA repair and mutagenesis, the cell cycle, induced
instability and leukaemogenesis.
RAGSU shares a common infrastructure with the MRC Mammalian
Genetics Unit/Mouse Genome Centre at Harwell; there is an active
joint PhD training programme with registrations via Oxford and
other universities.
Reimbursement of certain relocation expenses will be considered
as part of the overall package offered; additional incentives may be
available to overseas applicants.
Informal enquires may be made to the Director, Professor Dudley
Goodhead - [log in to unmask] Telephone 01235-

Shortlisted candidates, following a visit to the Unit, will be invited
to submit a summary of research proposals. Interviews will be
held in mid-November. Further information can be found on our
web site at http://www.har.mrc.ac.uk
Please send applications to Julie Cox, Administrator, Medical
