I am writing about the evaluation of PUS initiatives in the UK, starting
with Durant's seminal 1989 survey. Does anyone know whether this has been
followed up more recently, other than in the 1992 Eurobarometer survey.
--------
John Durant and Martin Bauer ran a follow-up study in 1996 which was
presented at a COPUS briefing at the Royal Society in December 1997. Here's
an abstract from its summary. "Over the eight years from 1988 to 1996, the
British public continued to show high levels of awareness in science,
technology and medicine. At the same time, they became slightly more
knowledgeable about these subjects. Basic awareness of DNA, in particular,
increased rather dramatically. At the same time public attitudes towards
science and technology became rather ambivalent. Measures taken for the
first time in 1996 provide new base-line information on levels of public
exposure to science and technology, on public attitudes towards science as a
career and on public confidence in scientific expertise."
A copy of the summary is available for reference in the Information Service
