One-year graduate studentship to research the impact of initiatives to
promote public education in mathematics
Applications are invited from UK and other EC nationals for this
studentship, tenable at the University of Cambridge from 1 October 1999.
The studentship is funded through the Millennium Mathematics Project with
support from the Royal Society of Arts, and is intended to support
research aimed at developing better understanding of how initiatives to
promote public understanding of mathematics impact on the whole range of
secondary school pupils.
The successful applicant will follow the one-year MPhil course in
Educational Research, pursuing a study on the impact of initiatives to
promote public education in mathematics. It is also expected that he or
she will seek to use this opportunity as a springboard to apply for a
studentship to continue to PhD study on this topic.
Candidates should have a sound background in mathematics and interest in
public education; understanding of schools, teachers and pupils and the
capacity to work effectively with them; and demonstrable aptitude for
training as an educational researcher. Admission to Cambridge as a
graduate student requires possession of a good honours degree (or a higher
degree) in a relevant subject area.
The studentship will cover university and college fees, maintenance at
the basic ESRC studentship rate of 6455 per annum, and a budget for
fieldwork expenses.
