France confirms its commitment to the AlphaGalileo science news service
At the British Association for the Advancement of Scienceıs annual Festival in Sheffield yesterday a senior French civil servant confirmed French support for the AlphaGalileo Internet news centre for science and technology.
Anne-Marie Revco from the French Ministry of Education, Research and Technology said, "the AlphaGalileo European press centre for science and technology is one of the tools that European science needs." She added, "during its presidency of the European Union in the second half of the year 2000, France will encourage its European partners to actively promote science and technology information at the European level, including wider use of AlphaGalileo."
Launching the upgraded AlphaGalileo service, Dr Michel Bernier, Science Counsellor at the French embassy in London, welcomed Franco-British collaboration on behalf of all of Europe. He emphasised the importance in of gaining the support of other European nations for better science communication within Europe and beyond.
AlphaGalileo provides news about the latest development in European science to journalists world-wide, with the aim of ensuring young people, industry and the general public appreciate the excitement and significance of European research. Lord Sainsbury, the British Minister for Science launched the service a year ago by. The service now has almost a thousand registered journalists and 600 registered contributors from almost all European countries.
