A BETTER PRESS FOR BRITISH SCIENCE
A COPUS forum in association with the CVCP

Tues 29 June 1999 from 9.30-4.00pm
Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals,
Woburn House, 20 Tavistock Square, London WC1H 9HQ

The forum aims to identify effective ways of highlighting the important
work being done by many university research departments in the UK; and
to
find ways of facilitating the promotion of the work of the universities
to
the general public. Some of the issues covered include:

How can we ensure that information is easily accessible?
What are the areas of mutual advantage and common interest?
What support is available to PR officer?
What do the science media want from experts?

Refreshments and lunch will be provided during the day.

You may register for a full or half day. Attendance is free for press
officers, scientists, broadcasters, journalists, information service
providers, those involved in promoting academic research and COPUS
representatives. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first
come
basis. To reserve a place, please return the registration form below or
email us at [log in to unmask]

Press officers are guaranteed a space if accompanied by a research
scientist and vice a versa.

A BETTER PRESS FOR BRITISH SCIENCE
A COPUS forum in association with the CVCP

Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals, Woburn House,
20 Tavistock Square, London WC1H 9HQ on Tues 29 June 1999 from
9.30-4.00pm

9.30-10.00	Registration and coffee

10.00-10.15	British science - a success story that deserves a good
press
An introduction by Chair (Dame Bridget Ogilvie)

10.15-11.15	The problem and the opportunity.
Four talks from a different perspective

- Encouraging colleagues to talk to the media (the scientist)
- Effective methods of disseminating information (the press officer)
- Why more UK science would be good news (the journalist)
- The benefits of promoting science (the funder)

11.15-11.45 Coffee

11.45-12.30	How do we get a better press for British science
Discussion with panel from previous session and actions for the
future

12.30-1.30	Lunch

1.30-1.45	Introduction to workshops and welcome to new arrivals.
(delegates will be invited to select one of the following workshops)

1.45-3.00	AlphaGalileo
In September last year, Europe's first internet
press centre for science was launched. Over 1200 press releases have
been
posted on the site and at and increasing rate. But only a small
proportion
of UK university press officers are using the site. Why?

Controversial Science
As Sir Aaron Klug remarked recently, "New science
disrupts and really good science disrupts a good deal". How can
scientists
and journalists work together to ensure that the public gets a clear and
balanced message?

Consumer Interest
The cosy world of science communication has yet to
reach the readers of lifestyle magazines and primetime TV. What are we
doing wrong?

The Communications Triangle
How are new scientific development reported? Who is
involved in the process? Are good communication channels clear? Would we
better off in Bermuda?

Reputations and celebrating scientific success
Britain's higher education institutions are home to
some of the worlds best scientists. How can the universities and science
world exploit this resource?

3.00-4.00	Report back and discussion

4.00 Close
