Dear Heather,
In addition to Roy's excellent suggestions you may wish to try the
following:
To reduce the sweating; Prantal Powder (over-the-counter preparation in
Australia) which is an anticholinergic that decreases neurotransmitter
release to sweat glands. Hence it works before the sweat is produced,
rather than absorbing it or blocking sweat ducts.
To 'kill-off' the infection that causes pitted keratolysis; Neosporin
ointment (S4 prescription) which is a combination of polymyxin, bacitracin
and neomycin. In addition, other antibiotics that are reportedly effective
include, 2% erythromycin and 1% clindamycin solution.
Not that it will help you now, however a few students from UWSM will be
publishing a paper on pitted keratolysis soon in AJPM - it is nearing the
end of the reveiw process now, so hopefully it will be out prior to the end
of the year.
Cheers,

Subject: sweaty feet
Help! I am a Podiatrist, but my sons feet have de-feated (!) me He has
chronic hyperidrosis and pitted keratolysis. Can anyone suggest a cure for
the pungent sweat and also the bacterial/fungal infection? He tried
metronidazole which worked for a short time and Savlon soaks had a limited
success. He is so desperate he is now considering a lumbar sympathectomy.
Does anyone know of results of this procedure? Thanks for any help you can
offer.
Heather
