<< Thought I'd share something with you a gem that has occurred today here in
Queensland.

Ten months of planning has gone into a symposium here in Brisbane called
"Diabetic Foot Update '99", organised by the diabetes special interest group
of the Australian Podiatry Association (Qld).

As a gesture of good faith, we invited a local orthopaedic foot & ankle
specialist to speak on the topic of "Orthopaedic surgery for the diabetic
foot", or a topic of his choice. The speaker was confirmed (months ago) and
was more than happy to be involved (I invited him personally).

Today it seems, the ?? Australian Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society ?? has
sent this poor gentleman and ultimatum, and he has had to withdraw as a
speaker for this event, which is to take place in a little under 3 weeks. It
seems that he presence could be interpreted as "support for podiatrists and
podiatric surgery".

My question is, how are our professional groups ever going to get along with
this kind of childish behaviour? Especially when an "olive branch" gesture to
invite an orthopaedic surgeon to a podiatry seminar can be so misconstrued?

The message that seems to send to me is: podiatry patients aren't valued as
potential patients by orthopaedic surgeons, therefore send to a podiatric
surgeon!

Since we have no speaker for diabetic foot surgery, we will endeavour to
find a PODIATRIC SURGEON to fill this space. >>

And some of you wonder why the papers published in Foot and Ankle
International have little to no reference to the podiatric literature? They
wish we didn't exist!!

Cheers,

Kevin
