I think that one difference is in the perception of the patient.
Here in the US the patient may think of their podiatrist as being no
different than and equal in providing medical care to their family doctor,
except that they only treat their feet. American podiatrists also use the
title of doctor.
My Australian experience tells me that the podiatrist provides foot
treatment/management as an ancillary not medical service. Although the
treatment may identical to that in the US or that provided by a MD. In this
way the pod works with the patient's medical doctor as one step under and
not equal to them. Additionally, Australian pods do not generally use the
title of doctor unless they also hold an MD or PhD.
