PRINCIPAL/SENIOR MATHEMATICAL SCIENTIST
[REF: 12/110(4)]
An opportunity exists for a Principal/Senior Mathematical Scientist to
join the Mathematics and Decision Systems Group. Silsoe Research
Institute is the foremost research centre for engineering, physical
sciences and mathematics relevant to the needs of the biological
industries, particularly agriculture and food. The Group carries out
research and development into mathematical modelling and optimisation at
a systems level in agri-food. The central theme of the programme is to
underpin decision making in relation to processes of importance to our
industry sector. The decision process applied to biological systems
raises distinct challenges, particularly in relation to uncertainty and
risk, signal/information interpretation, system optimisation and
control, which need advances in mathematical methods for their solution.
The successful candidate would lead research into the mathematics of
these problems in the context of the strategic interests of the
Institute, which range from the cellular level to crops and whole
animals, and from new engineering technologies to impacts on food
processing or the natural environment. The timescales involved can range
from real time optimal control of the greenhouse environment, through
tactical farm decision making on optimal fungicide treatments for a
wheat crop to long term predictions of future land use under climate
change. This research will increase the scientific understanding of
these systems, provide insights and guidance to policy makers and
decision makers in the industry, and lead to new practical approaches.
Specific responsibilities will include:
* Advancing the application of mathematical modelling and optimisation
to decision systems in agriculture and food.
* Providing the mathematics input in collaborative research projects
with other scientists requiring for example real-time control, time
series analysis, probability modelling or decision analysis.
* Line management of graduate and post doctoral scientists.
* Identifying new research lines and seeking appropriate funding.
* Developing national and international research collaborations, in
mathematics and with other disciplines.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have national or international recognition, together
with a good track record of publications, in a relevant area of
mathematical or related science. Experience is required of initiating
and developing long term research and of collaboration with other
research activities. The ability to explain scientific concepts in the
context of the strategic needs of industry is essential.
Status of Post:
This is a fluid graded post at either Band 4 or Band 5. Appointment at
Band 4 will require more research experience.
The salary scale for Band 4 is £27,000 to £42,200. Pay on appointment
will normally be between the Band minimum and Standard Pay Point
(£33,500) but can be higher for the outstanding candidate. The salary
scale for Band 5 is £22,900 to £31,500. Pay on appointment will normally
be between the Band minimum and Standard Pay Point (£26,400).
