According to the Oxford dictionary the term
succour means "to come to the aid of..".
Why is it then that so often this aid is denied one of
the most needy patient groups? The terminally ill
,suffering intractable pain and without realistic hope
of relieving their distress.
So often such a person is refused the express wish to
die with dignity. This state of affairs is often
allowed to continue despite, the supporting wishes of
close family and loved ones. Most usually at the
forefront of such decisions is a religious health
professional, bent on fulfilling an apparently
groundless belief that human beings have to suffer for
the redemption of mankind to be made real.
Honestly!are we still morally in the dark ages
,taking guidance from a belief system without any
evidence to support itself?
By attempting to answer and live our lives to the
tune of a deity to which we cannot prove the
exsistence of,we deny ourselves and our patients the
self-determination and freedom to make value-free
decisions .
The richness of life is in the moment and according
to Satre, hell can be found "in other people".
