About 1852 the Dylife mine in Montgomeryshire erected a waterwheel known
as the Red Wheel for pumping. It was 63 x 3.5 ft, and David Bick
believes that it was the largest ever erected in Wales. Two years later
the Lady Isabella wheel at Laxey in the Isle of Man was built, 72.5 x 6
ft, also for pumping. Was the Red Wheel the largest in the UK for two
years? Was there ever one greater in England, or elsewhere? I'm
interested primarily in wheels for mining; I believe there were larger
ones for other purposes.
